Galen Gray: Shy, creative and contemplative, from the beginning, Galen does not really fit into the world of which he is a part. Struggling to fulfil his ambitions despite the animosity and disapproval of his parents, life seems only to surround him with hatred and lay down obstacles at every turn...until one final tragedy leads him to Domino, and making a decision that will change everything.

Xara Watson: The early years of Xara's childhood are idyllic; pretty and intelligent she is born at the dawn of the twenty first century to wealthy, loving parents and early on forms a close friendship with the impulsive Aidi. As a teenager, however, she finds her life falling apart following a terrible twist of fate, which in turn sees a very different person join Aidi some years later and succumb to the allure of Domino.

Aidi Leonotta: Xara's pen pal and best friend from the age of seven, vivacious, flirtatious Aidi hails from Sicily, usually intent on collecting admirers, despairing at Xara's taste in men, getting into scrapes and eating everything. Aidi does not like to run, considers a phone call before noon an assassination attempt and deplores geese.

Jack Swift: Friendly, courageous and determined, Jack is liked and respected by almost all of those around him, Daniel being the one exception, in bearing him a mysterious and enduring grudge. Jack is a keen builder and mechanic, his prize piece being the enviable and inventive solar powered Aquackle. His skills and ability to evade all efforts of capture made by his enemies have rendered him invaluable to his companions.

Daniel Adair: One time obsessive computer nut, passionately committed to achieving his dream of working in computer animation, Daniel inadvertently finds himself exposed to the worst interests imaginable. Three years on he is self indulgent, roguish, cynical and bitter. He does little to conceal his sarcasm and unpleasantness when forced to tolerate others, and makes no pretence at all that he regards Jack with anything other than hostility and contempt. He refutes the label of 'rebel without a cause', considering his aim to amass huge quantities of whiskey, cigarettes and cannabis as a more than worthy occupation, to which he accordingly devotes much of his time. He has a pet cat, Sludge, so called to annoy anyone who feels that cute and adorable fluffballs should be named euphoniously.
